Planning a publication blog

Creating a brochure was a new experience for me, also learning the various tools in NeoOffice to help with the publication was fun with a slight learning curve.

How can projects help my students meet standards and develop 21st century skills?

I feel students are naturally drawn to many of the 21st century skills through the use and understanding of computers and of related software. Project based learning allows students to address 21st century skills in the following areas.

Accountability and Adaptability- students usually have access to most information both at home and at school by saving and having easy access to information/ projects with the use of on line storage, external hard drives, network storage and storage in e-mail accounts. This offers flexibility of student work and also accountability for the completion and quality of their work.

Communication skills – Students quickly utilize all forms of communication or any software that can be used to convey information through sound, images and information with many programs such as iMovie, photo booth, and Keynote

Creativity and Intellectual Curiosity – Although the use of information technology fosters both creativity and curiosity, I feel this is where teachers are responsible to encourage students to be open to new and diverse perspectives. I also find during open student discussion that although students may not be up to date with world events, they usually do have a good sense of the “big picture” and their roles and future in society

Critical Thinking and Systems Thinking – This is another area that warrants particular teacher attention in helping students to think “outside the box”, but again I think students already have a great sense of interconnections between systems through their upbringing with technology and the use of multiple forms of communication and information gathering.

Information and Media Literacy Skills – Students again naturally ares trong in this area from their exposure to multiple types of technology and communication.

Interpersonal and Collaborative Skills - Project based learning with technology naturally gives students an edge with collaborative work by gravitiating towards areas of work and research which are usually their strength or familularity

Problem Identification, Formulation, and Solution – This is an area that would vary with each student, but with project learning, students are able to work at their own pace, research in ways that they find comfortable, and eventually problem solve within their own capacity. This is another area where individual attention from a teacher is key to the development of the student's learning.

Self-Direction – Once again, here is an area that is natural to most students due to the familiarity of technological resources.

Social Responsibility – One example of this would be the proper use of copyright laws when using information, images, sound and music.

How can I use projects to enhance student learning?

Media projects are used in the A/V classes as a final product.

Project based learning in the history of rock and roll class would be a great way to enhance the civil rights and protest music unit.

Project getting some direction

Having spent the weekend back and forth to Belfast on a bus and watching KV students work hard in rehearsals and performing great concerts, I found time to explore Marianne's suggestion of doing something with the History of R n R class as a project. After much research, I think there is enough there to use, so thats what I am going to do, build something out of the message of Rn R, civil rights and protest music.
